Get a Glimpse of the Movie “The Artist”

It was a risk to produce, a silent film in an era of 3-D, computer generated images and special effects. However, “The Artist” proved its self among film connoisseurs and general audiences alike. It was the story of Valentino and the art of silent moviemaking, and it was the story of a genre of art that has been all but brought to its extinction. “The Artist” is a must-see film that will challenge everything you thought you knew about entertainment.
The Plot
The plot of this film is very simple. It was the experiences of Valentino. Valentino was a silent film era god. He established what it means to be a romantic lead, a leading man and a character actor.
The Good Parts
I think that the best parts of this film were related to its range of cinematic expressions. It was not just a slapstick film, not just a romantic comedy, and not just a historical bio-epic, it was all of these things and more. This deceptively simple film, was layered with complexity, if you wanted to look for it. However, it was just as enjoyable if you watched the film for no other purpose but entertainment and a good time.
The Not So Good Parts
Every creation has good and bad components and this film was no exception. The first drawback was that it was a silent film. This means that it was shot using methodologies that were as authentic to this genre as possible. This means that there were limited use of sound, and the aspect ratio of the film was the blocky standard of 1:33. What this means is that the framing of the movie scenes were limited to a square setting. The absence of sound was difficult to deal with as I wanted voices, music and sound effects. These things add to the dynamics of a film and become characters unto themselves. These missing elements were confusing at first, but once you settle into the story and characters, their absence becomes less distracting.
Silent Picture Return?
The experiment was to introduce multi-media addicted audiences to a simpler form of film styling, the silent film. Was it a success? I think it was. The film gained both critical and popular acclaim and did very well in the box office, despite being an indie film. However, the success of this film does not necessarily mean that audiences will have a similar response to other silent films. It is the quality and timing of such experimental projects that make the difference between an Academy Award winner and a flop.
